Sustainable Coffee Roasters

Learn about our sustainability journey, and our road to becoming a Carbon Neutral organisation.

We love our people & our planet

Here at Brew Coffee Roasters, we are committed to sustainability and ensuring we have the lowest carbon footprint we possibly can. Investing in and maintaining positive working relationships with our suppliers and, in turn, our coffee farmers is wildly important to us. We actively support initiatives such as Fairtrade, Rainforest Alliance, and certified organic practices, and in the past, we have been involved with the Young Farmers Project.

Sustainability initiatives implemented in our business to minimise our impact on the environment include recycling all our packaging and boxes, giving our coffee-roasted by-product husks and cafe-used grounds to a local third-party business to be recycled into compost and mulch, providing coffee tubs to cafes, moving all our retail coffee pouches to soft plastic recyclable bags and stocking eco-packaging products such as cups, lids and straws. In August 2023, we installed a Loring Roaster which is the most environmentally friendly roaster on the market. This energy-efficient roaster consumes up to 80% less fuel compared to conventional roasters resulting in up to 80% less greenhouse gas emissions.

Celebrating Sustainability: Brew Coffee Roasters Go Carbon Neutral

We’re excited to share a milestone that underscores our unwavering commitment to sustainability. Brew Coffee Roasters are officially recognised as a Carbon Neutral Organisation! This certification signifies a substantial achievement in our ongoing efforts to minimise our environmental footprint and uphold responsible business practices.

Leading the Way

We’re super proud to join the growing number of businesses in Australia who are working hard to reduce their carbon footprint. We are even prouder to be one of the first WA owned coffee roasters to be certified a carbon neutral organisation by Climate Active. It’s a testament to our dedication to environmental responsibility and sets a benchmark for others in our industry to follow. As we take pride in this achievement, we’re very aware that there’s more work to be done to ensure a sustainable future!

Turning words into action

Our Commitment to Sustainable Coffee

Sustainability has always been at the heart of our operations. Since our journey began in 2006, we've held firm to our core values, actively supporting initiatives such as Fairtrade, Rainforest Alliance, and the Young Farmers Project. Our commitment to sustainability isn't just for show; it's embedded in our daily practices.

Recycling Enthusiasts
We’re always on the lookout for sustainable packaging materials we can adopt. We recycle all our packaging and boxes, ensuring that as little waste as possible ends up in landfills.
Coffee's Second Life
Our coffee-roasted by-product husks and cafe-used grounds are repurposed by a local third-party business into valuable compost and mulch.
Eco-conscious Packaging
We've transitioned our retail coffee pouches to soft plastic recyclable bags and stock eco-friendly packaging products like cups, lids, and straws.
Clean Roasting
Our Loring roaster uses a single burner to roast beans and incinerate smoke within the roaster itself eliminating the need for an external afterburner, making it a cleaner more efficient process.

Measuring our impact

In 2022, we took a significant step forward by engaging a Carbon Consultant to measure our business practices carbon emissions accurately. This eye-opening (and mammoth) experience prompted us to develop an Emissions Reduction Strategy, focusing on reducing controlled electricity, diesel, and green bean emissions.

In the 2022-2023 financial year, we reported a total of 799 metric tonnes of carbon emissions from our business practices. To offset our footprint, we’ve partnered with impactful projects:

Pacajai REDD+ Project: The Pacajai REDD+ project is dedicated to forest protection, providing legal land-use permits, sustainable livelihood alternatives, and agroforestry techniques to local communities. It’s our commitment to prevent over 10 million tonnes of harmful CO2 from entering the atmosphere over the project’s lifetime!

Midilli Hydroelectric Plant: Contributing to Turkey’s sustainable development priorities, the Midilli Hydroelectric plant not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions, but also creates jobs and promotes know-how dissemination. How good!
